WASHINGTON D.C. — Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-05) has intensified his criticism of House Republicans, accusing them of intentionally prolonging the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown by refusing to accept bipartisan reforms aimed at curbing misconduct within ICE.

In a direct message shared on social media, Meeks argued that the current standoff is a result of the GOP’s refusal to implement “common-sense oversight” for federal immigration agents. The highlights of his statement include:

• Impact on Critical Services: Meeks warned that by keeping the DHS shuttered, Republicans are effectively stopping FEMA’s disaster responses, increasing travel delays at major airports, and disrupting essential Coast Guard missions.
• The “Big Ugly” Law: The Congressman criticized the legislative tactics being used, noting that while Republicans admit privately that ICE needs oversight, they continue to block formal accountability measures.
